Israel Condemns Vicious Terror Slaughter at Northern Sinai Mosque

At least 50 people have been killed after militants attacked a mosque in the north of Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, the Sky News Arabia TV channel reported on Friday.

A bomb explosion ripped through the mosque before gunmen opened fire on the worshippers gathered for weekly Friday prayers, officials said.

Egypt has also faced attacks by militants in its Western Desert, including an attack last month that killed 16 police, according to an official tally issued by the Interior Ministry.

President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi vowed to respond to the attack on al Rawdah mosque with "brute force". Egypt's presidency has also declared a three-day mourning period, Egyptian state news agency MENA reported.

"Horrible and cowardly terrorist attack on innocent and defenseless worshipers in Egypt", Trump tweeted.

Eyewitnesses told the privately-run Al-Yawm al-Sabi website that attackers had stormed the Al-Rawda mosque in the town of Bir al-Abd, and then detonated an explosive device, according to BBC Monitoring. 33 Egyptians security forces were killed and a three-month long state of emergency ensued. Dozens of bodies were arrayed on the carpeted floor, their arms folded and their faces covered in sheets, many of them streaked with blood.

Meanwhile, Egypt's Grand Mufti Shawqi Allam said such terrorist attacks aim at fomenting sedition everywhere, even at mosques, stressing that perpetrators of this terrorist act have no mercy or humanity. However, mosque attacks are relatively rare in Egypt.

He added in his tweet "The world can not tolerate terrorism, we must defeat them militarily and discredit the extremist ideology that forms the basis of their existence".

Grand Imam of Al Azhar Ahmed al-Tayeb denounced the attack and stressed the importance of working to eliminate terrorists.

It comes weeks after a major militant attack on Egyptian soldiers in Sinai. Condolences with all those in Egypt affected by this evil and cowardly act.

"In this hour of tragedy, the government and the people of India stand by the government and the people of Egypt", he said.

The public prosecutors' office said in a statement 235 people had been killed and 109 more wounded.
