Saad Hariri Arrives in Cairo to Address Crisis in Lebanon

Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri arrived in Cairo on Tuesday after a three-day visit to France to meet Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. He told reporters after the meeting that he will arrive in Beirut in time to celebrate Lebanon's Independence Day on Wednesday with the rest of the country.

Hariri is still expected to return to Lebanon, more than two weeks after his shock resignation from Saudi Arabia.

Fireworks were heard in Beirut as Hariri supporters in mainly Sunni areas celebrated his impending return.

Rouhani on Tuesday said it's unfortunate the organisation expressed regret that the Yemeni rebels known as Houthis launched a ballistic missile into Saudi Arabia earlier this month in response to "so much bombing" by the Saudi-led coalition.

Saad Hariri had unexpectedly resigned as Prime Minister from Saudi Arabia resulting in a political crisis in the region.

In Lebanon, the army chief called on troops to stand firm against any attempt to incite strife in the country amid the crisis triggered by Hariri's resignation. Saudi Arabia and Hariri say his movements are not restricted. A message on Hariri's Twitter account said the meeting would be followed by a dinner in his honor.

Hariri, who flew to Cairo from Paris earlier in the day, resigned in a televised message on November 4 from Saudi Arabia, a highly unusual move that raised suspicions he may have been forced to step down by his Saudi patrons as part of Riyadh's escalation against Iran and its Lebanese proxy Hezbollah.

Hariri, a Sunni Muslim, is a long-time ally of Saudi Arabia. He has, however, managed to pursue regional policies different from those of Riyadh, particularly in Syria and Yemen, without inflicting serious damage on relations with the Saudis.
