14 drown as boat capsizes in Krishna river

The incident occurred around 5.45 PM when a private tourism boat was making a trip from Punnami Ghat, Bhavanipuram, to Pavitra Sangamam, Ferry village, the official said.

A total of 38 passengers and three crew members were on-board the vessel, which was operated by a private company and traveling along the Krishna river near Vijayawada on Sunday. Later, 16 bodies were fished out of the river. "As it was nearing the ferry point, it came to a sudden halt as a result of which passengers fell towards one side of the boat and it overturned within seconds", a survivor told the local media persons. However, locals allege that many boats do not have sufficient number of life jackets and carry more passengers than their sanctioned capacity.

Last week, at least nine people, including five children, drowned in two incidents in Vaishali and Samastipur districts of Bihar today, police had said.
