Will David Ross become next Cubs bench coach?

Two division titles, but two early postseason exits, led to Dusty Baker not being retained as Washington Nationals manager. He worked for the Rays as an instructor for a couple years before coming on as the team's bench coach after the 2007 season, working under Joe Maddon.

It will be interesting to see Martinez go head-to-head against Joe Maddon on the field next season. Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo was the scouting director for Arizona at the time. The two were together with the Cubs for the past three seasons, including that team's 2016 World Series championship. Wade Boggs, a friend and former teammate of Martinez with the Rays, tweeted his congratulations. Martinez was mainly an outfielder.

Martinez gives the Nationals a different look - a fresher face than Baker or Davey Johnson, but a more relaxed leader than Williams. Two years later, Williams was sacked following a debacle in 2015.

The Nationals have yet to win a playoff series since the franchise relocated from Montreal in 2005. He has interviewed for several openings in recent years, including the Nationals job four years ago, but to date has not been selected. He has always been a rumored candidate for a step up to a managerial spot, and Washington will provide that opportunity. Martinez's deal is reportedly for three years. It is believed the announcement is only being delayed out of deference to the Series, and MLB's wish that teams avoid major announcements during baseball's showcase. The Astros and Dodgers - both of whom have young managers similar to Martinez - play Game 5 of the World Series Sunday before an off-day Monday.
