Wozniacki reaches semi-finals by thrashing Halep at WTA Finals

Caroline Wozniacki believes the round-robin format used at the WTA Finals has helped her relax into this year's tournament but finds it hard to explain the stunning form that has eased her into the semi-finals with a match to spare.

Former WTA Finals finalist Caroline Wozniacki made things look very easy as she blasted past World No. 1 Simona Halep for the loss of just two games. The wall that the Dane often puts up at the back of the court, thanks to her stunning defence, is proving as impenetrable as ever here.

"I feel great that the first tournament where I'm No.1, I won the first match", Halep said. "I tried to stay aggressive and go for my shots - it really worked for me today".

The 24-year-old said: "I'm very happy about the fight I showed on court".

"I'm not thinking about qualifying".

"I think it was one of my bad days".

"Everything I have in my head, I need to shake it off and play better next round". It looked as though nerves had first grappled with Garcia in the first set and it was a desolate Svitolina who struggled to find any answers to why one of the most consistent players this year has been all at sea.

"[Wozniacki] played some great two matches".

The respite was fleeting, however, as Wozniacki continued to punish Halep's scrappy forehand to break for a 3-1 lead and an ace snuffed out the only break point the Dane faced all match as she moved within two games of victory.

In the first set after two exchanges of breaks, the players forced it to a tie-break, where Garcia led 4-0, then her level dropped a little bit and Svitolina came back, saved two set points on 5-6 and 6-7, and won the set taking advantage of some Garcia's misses. I mean, I wish I knew what was happening today with my game, because even though it's 7-5 in the third - my game was completely off. Her biggest failure of the season remains in Grand Slams where she lacked inspiration, especially in that quarterfinal at the French Open when she allowed Halep to bounce back from the deep hole she had entered. I think if I just could keep the ball in, I could have been much better. Wozniacki & Garcia are scheduled not before 4pm (9am BST) on Friday, with Halep & Svitolina not before 7:30pm (12:30pm BST).
