Men Gave Nazi Salutes And Shot At Protesters After Richard Spencer's Speech

Police in Gainesville, Florida, arrested three Texas men after a gun was sacked at protesters near white nationalist Richard Spencer's speech at the University of Florida on Thursday, October 19.

Fear and his older brother were arrested later for allegedly urging Tyler Tenbrink, 30 of Richmond, Texas, to shoot at protesters.

According to an arrest report, the three men were in a vehicle when they stopped by a bus stop and began arguing with a man, who was in a group of six to eight people. Tenbrink was also charged with being a felon in possession of a weapon, stemming from an arrest in 2009 for aggravated kidnapping of a female acquaintance in Texas.

William Fears and Colton Fears remain at the county jail on a $1 million bond, and Tenbrink is held on a $3 million bond, according to jail records. He fired a single shot at the group, which missed and struck a nearby building, according to police. Police executed a traffic stop and arrested the three men.

'I am amazed that immediately after being shot at, a victim had the forethought to get the vehicle's license number, ' Tobias said.

Tenbrink allegedly fired at the group of protesters, police said.

Before Spencer's speech on Thursday, the Gainesville Sun actually interviewed William Fears about why he drove from Houston to hear an advocate of ethnic cleansing lecture college students about free speech. Police said the men "began threatening, offering Nazi salutes, and chants about Hitler".

As previously reported, Florida's Republican Governor Rick Scott issued a state of emergency in advance of the event to stave off potential violence. Police in riot gear and others with batons eventually formed a line to stop the crowd and escorted the man away.

A video taken by a Tampa Bay Times reporter following Spencer's speech appears to show Tenbrink getting surrounded by protestors before he hopped over a fence.

Security costs for the University of Florida Police Department, Gainesville Police Department, Alachua County Sheriff's Office, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Florida Highway Patrol and other agencies total more than $500,000, according to the school website.

Spencer previously helped organize the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, at which heavily armed white nationalists fought with counterprotesters in a bloody day of violence. "We don't want your Nazi hate!" and "Let's go Gators" during his speech, frustrating the head of the National Policy Institute.
