Blast kills 7 police, 22 civilians in Pakistan's Quetta

At least six persons, including six policemen, were killed today when Pakistani militants targeted police van in the restive Baluchistan's capital Quetta, police said.

However, the nature of the blast is yet to be ascertained.

According to reports, a 35-strong contingent of Elite policemen had been recently assigned patrol of various sensitive areas and was on its way when the explosion took place on the Quetta-Sibi road, Balochistan Home Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti said, adding that it was "apparently a suicide attack".

His body has been shifted to Civil Hospital, Quetta.

Security forces have reached the location and cordoned off the area, and a security sweep is underway, it said.

The minister said that 21 others were injured in the attack on Sariab Road near Darakhshan Railway Phaatak, while a police official put the number of wounded at 25.

Chief Minister Sanaullah Zehri told reporters that the bomb contained 80 kilogrammes of explosive material. "We will continue the war against these terrorists and we will defeat them".

"We are at war and our security forces are being targeted as they are crushing the enemies", Bugti said.

Baloshistan has witnessed several blasts and targeted killings in the past few months.

Quetta's deputy police inspector general, Razzaq Cheema, explained that before the attack they had information about plans by extremist groups.

Pakistani leaders, including Imran Khan, and members of the civil society condemned the attack, praying for the victims.
