LEGO Ideas Women of NASA launches this November

LEGO Ideas Women of NASA launches this November

Fan designer Maia Weinstock will be at the LEGO Store on New York City on October 28 to sign copies of the set ahead of its wide release on November 1.

The new Women of NASA set features minifigures of Sally Ride, Mae Jemison, Margaret Hamilton and Nancy Grace Roman.

The move makes sense as it promotes the role of women in the workplace, and it gives young girls a slate of new heroes to choose from that can hopefully inspire them and let them know that there's nothing they can't do. Hamilton's model stacks giant books of flight software, Roman comes with a miniature Hubble Space Telescope, and Jemison and Ride stand beside the Space Shuttle. You can also launch the International Space Station with Sally Ride, the first woman in space, and Mae Jemison, the world's first woman of colour in space.

The set will be available to purchase on 1st November, though it will be available at a one-off event on 28th October in the 5th Avenue Lego Store in NY.

LEGO's Women of NASA set will will cost $24.99. The primarily minifigure set has 231 pieces, and will retail for $24.99 United States dollars. Katherine Johnson, the NASA mathematician and Presidential Medal of Freedom award victor who inspired the Oscar-nominated film, "Hidden Figures", was not made into a Lego, as Gizmodo reported.

"I was extremely excited about working on this one, especially as I had already heard of it and really wanted it to become a set", said Lego designer Gemma Anderson.

Each Lego figurine will include 231 pieces that link each woman to her NASA contribution.

The proposal bubbled up through a Lego program that solicits ideas for customized toy figures, and then turns some of the top ideas into actual play sets.

This isn't the first time Lego has put together a set celebrating female scientists and engineers.

However, the first glimpse into the final version of the Lego set reveals that Johnson - who was also featured in the recent film "Hidden Figures" - was left out.
