Microsoft Releases New Versions Of Windows 10 And Server

The next major feature update for Microsoft's Windows 10 operating system is here.

Between the release of Windows 10 Fall Creators Edition and the announcement of a new Surface Book, today's Microsoft news was firmly focused on the desktop. Finally integrated is the long-promised desktop chat integration for contacts from LinkedIn and Skype, as well as a new Android and iPhone linking feature.

Mixed reality is Microsoft's spin on augmented and virtual-reality experiences. Launching in parallel is a host of low-priced AR headsets, courtesy of collaboration between Microsoft and several major tech companies.

"Since version 1511 was released in November 2015, Microsoft has released additional feature updates that build upon each other, delivering the newest features and more comprehensive security", the note stated.

But that doesn't mean the only thing worth paying attention to in the Fall Creators Update is Windows Mixed Reality. Although most of the features were showcased in the video, Microsoft is expecting to release more in the coming months.

All of these changes, as well as the many improvements Microsoft made to Windows 10's accessibility, are welcome.

If Fall Creators Update is installed, your Version number will be 1709 and your Build number will be 16299.19 as shown below.

The new Photos app lets you add filters, text, and 3D effects to your snaps and videos, and even digital ink, soundtracks, themes, and transitions. That's a bummer, but you can easily avoid that. Given that the update is free, there is no reason for you not to get it as soon as possible. After that, you can use it to clean install your PC, and the instructions for that are available here.

The best way to do so is to use the Windows 10 Update Assistant. The Fall Creators Update is set to arrive on October 17.

Choose Advanced Options again, and from here you can control download and upload settings, as well as put a cap on how much you'll upload per month.

But waiting is for squares. If they're running version 1511 or earlier, they should manually update their devices to the current version, which is the Windows 10 Creators Update rolled out earlier this year.
