LaMarcus Aldridge agrees to contract extension with San Antonio Spurs

After a whirlwind summer of trade rumors and reports that he wasn't getting along with management, LaMarcus Aldridge signed what's being reported as a three-year extension that only actually adds two years to his time in San Antonio.

The deal will keep Aldridge under contract with the Spurs through the 2020-21 season.

"Entering his 12th National Basketball Association season at 32 years old, wear and tear might become an issue for the 6'11", 260-pounder in the near future, but the Spurs still wanted to make sure that he wasn't going anywhere after his contract had the potential to expire after this season if he declined his player option worth $22.3 million. Aldridge was an All-Star in his first season in San Antonio, but his individual numbers declined significantly. The extension will kick in at the beginning of the 2019-20 season. Despite his struggles the past two seasons, Aldridge would enter Spurs camp in the usual professional manner. The 32-year-old Dallas native is set to make $21.4 million in the 2016-17 season.

Popovich recently said Aldridge looked more comfortable in the offense and loose this preseason. Aldridge left the Portland Trail Blazers to join the Spurs on a four-year contract worth US$84 million (AU$111 million) in 2015. The dialogue helped strengthen their relationship, made Aldridge feel open to staying in San Antonio and gave the Spurs the peace of mind that they could continue to feature him as a much-needed supporting star for Leonard.
