Trump wanted tenfold increase in nuclear weapons, says network

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday denied a report from NBC News that he told his national security advisers in July he wanted to increase the country's nuclear arsenal by almost tenfold, saying he argued for its modernisation. Two-thirds of them say President Donald Trump's war of words with the isolated nation's leader is making the situation worse.

Bovada Sportsbook has released a series of politically-themed betting lines that include the commander-in-chief's claim that he would score higher on an IQ test than Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

Although US presidents have modernised weapon stockpiles over the years, any meaningful addition to the nuclear arsenal would violate treaty agreements.

"Trump indicated he wanted a bigger stockpile, not the bottom position on that downward-sloping curve", NBC reported. United States news reports have painted the relationship between Mr Trump and Mr Tillerson as tense.

- John Schindler (@20committee) October 11, 2017Now we know why Tillerson called Trump a moron. They briefly explained to Trump the legal and practical hurdles to a nuclear buildup, according to NBC News. But I want modernisation and I want total rehabilitation. Pure fiction, made up to demean.

The threat provoked widespread anger on social media and elsewhere with many attacking the president for directly challenging the First Amendment, which guarantees the freedom of the press. The Federal Communications Commission, which oversees broadcast licenses (for individual stations, not networks), is an independent agency in the federal government and is not required to follow presidential orders.

"The insanity and folly of this of course can not be overstated", the director for Disarmament and Threat Reduction Policy at the Arms Control Association, Kingston Reif, tweeted in response to the NBC report.
