Galen Rupp wins Chicago Marathon, snaps 15-year American title drought

Defending champion Abel Kirui crossed the line 28 seconds behind in second place, with fellow Kenyan Bernard Kipyego taking third spot. Ethiopia's Tirunesh Dibaba earned the victory in 2:18:31. "This was very special for me, this was my third marathon and I am pleased because I have learnt a lot", she said after the race.

Rupp, 31, was the first American man to win the Chicago Marathon since Morocco-born Khalid Khannouchi in 2002. "I've made the mistake in the past of going too hard, too soon..." Kenyans had won the Chicago men's title in 13 of the past 14 years. Dibaba was out in front on her own, having gapped Kosgei, while Kirui, Rupp and Ethiopian Sisay Lemma were in contention duking out who would finish where on the men's podium. Dibaba is a three-time Olympic gold medalist and has won five World Championship track gold medals.

The Chicago Marathon was only his fourth marathon ever.

"I really wanted to wait", Rupp said. "It feels tremendous. I feel so great I was able to pull it out".

As the race progressed in the second half the field began to diminish including world record holder Dennis Kimetto and Emmanuel Bett stepping off the course. The men's pack at that pace was as large as 26 people.

Hasay was third in Boston in 2:23:0 in what was her marathon debut.

Dibaba, 32, is a two-time 5,000m world champion and three-time 10,000m world champion.

She has won several laurels for the East African country at the Olympics and in other global competitions.

The Ethiopian had set her sights on the course record of 2:17:18 and although that proved to be beyond her, Dibaba eased to victory nearly two minutes ahead of Brigid Kosgei of Kenya, while home favourite Jordan Hasay was third.
