France take step closer to World Cup berth

Belgium maintained their unbeaten record, Sweden and Estonia claimed huge wins, and France moved one step away from Russian Federation in Saturday night's European World Cup qualifying action.

Bosnia's hopes of qualifying for the World Cup, meanwhile, suffered a blow after the squad lost at home 4-3 against Belgium, which has already secured a berth in Russian Federation.

Dario Dumic's header eight minutes from time looked to have given Bosnia a precious point, but minutes later Yannick Ferreira Carrasco netted from a tight angle to secure the win for Belgium.

Sweden thrashed Luxembourg in Solna, which temporarily put them ahead of France at the top of the group.

France went top of Group A with a 1-0 win over Bulgaria at the Stadion Vasil Levski.

The other game in the group sees Gibraltar, who are without a point, host Estonia.

France lost N'Golo Kante to a hamstring problem in the latter stages of the first period as Adrien Rabiot entered the field, and Bulgaria should have been level in the 36th minute when Hugo Lloris made a meal of a strike from Simeon Slavchev, but the Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper somehow kept out a close-range header from Georgi Kostadinov.

The likes of Wales and Scotland were left indebted to Belgium, who beat Bosnia 4-3 to stay top of their group but more importantly, push Bosnia down the second placed table, meaning Wales and Scotland have a better chance to be a "best placed runner up" and enter the play-off's.

Portugal meanwhile had a less than convincing result against minnows Andorra.

The European champions had to wait until the 63rd minute for Ronaldo to break the deadlock on the artificial pitch, before Andre Silva finally put their nerves to bed.

Davy Pröpper opened the scoring for the Netherlands in the 24th minute.

The early kickoff in that group saw the Faroe Islands draw 0-0 with Latvia.
