Wisconsin, Michigan were key targets of Russia-linked ads on Facebook

"We are sharing these ads with Congress because we want to do our part to help investigators gain a deeper understanding of Russian interference in the United States political system and explain those activities to the public", said Joel Kaplan, VP Global Public Policy, Facebook.

In a statement on Monday, Facebook fb said it would add more than 1,000 people over the next year and invest more in software to flag and take down ads automatically.

The ads violated Facebook's policies because they came from inauthentic accounts.

Sources also told CNN that the ads "employed a series of divisive messages aimed at breaking through the clutter of campaign ads online, including promoting anti-Muslim messages".

But while the company is not making the ads themselves available for all to see, it has revealed some more details about them - including the fact that they were seen by an estimated 10 million people in the US.

A number of Russian-linked Facebook ads specifically targeted MI and Wisconsin, two states crucial to Donald Trump's victory last November, according to four sources with direct knowledge of the situation. In many cases, the ads encouraged people to follow pages on those issues. In this case, there was no hacking involved, it was just ads being bought through an ad platform; some may have infringed Facebook's rules, but it certainly isn't hacking, at least in this particular case.

On Monday, Facebook gave Congress approximately 3,000 Russia-linked ads.

Reports that Russian Federation purchased Facebook ads and used Twitter bots to influence the 2016 election paints a picture of interference, says a Virginia Tech expert whose research focuses on the intersection of political participation and digital media.

The ad appeared on Facebook sometime between late 2015 and early 2016, and it could be seen as both supporting Black Lives Matter and representing it as a threat to white communities in Ferguson and Baltimore.

Special prosecutor Robert Mueller and parliamentary committees investigate possible links between Trump's campaign team and Russian Federation.

According to Facebook data, the ads' auditory was around 10 million people.

Such a reactive approach to limiting hate speech and misinformation is guaranteed to anger politicians profoundly and goad them into drastic measures such as content blocking, splitting up the companies themselves or blocking them as China does.
