Apple looks into two reports of iPhone 8 Plus splitting open

Korean media Hankyung reported that the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus batteries are manufactured by Samsung DSI and LG Chem. Early adopters of the new devices complained on Apple's support forums and sites like Reddit of a high-pitched buzzing sound stemming from the phones' built-in earpiece. Apple's iPhone has steadily been losing share in China, and analysts are split on how the company's new iPhone X model might fare there.

The first reported incident of the iPhone 8 Plus battery swelling occurred in Taichung, Taiwan when a woman bought a gold variant of the handset on September 23. 9to5Mac also reports that a Taiwanese 8 Plus owner saw her device crack open while it was on charge with the official Apple supplied adaptor.

Apple says that it is investigating the matter, and believes that the problem lies with the battery. It's probably the main reason the iPhone 8 was created in the first place since the iPhone X is going to be quite different than the rest. Also, the Tim Cook-led team bundles a Lightning to 3.5mm headphone jack adapter with the iPhone 7 and 8 models. However, teardown reports had suggested that the batteries of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are smaller than iPhone 7 and 7 Plus.

Apple confirmed it was "looking into" two reports of the issue but declined to comment further to The Independent. According to Apple, the iPhone was never meant to satisfy both requirements at once.

Apps have also bit the dust in this latest software version, as numerous core applications found on an iPhone are now experiencing functionality problems. It's easy to assume the root cause is related to the iPhone 8 Plus' battery, but that's not certain.

Once the iPhone 8 went on sale, some analysts said that their sluggish sales could be attributed to people waiting for the iPhone X. The iPhone X comes with a revamped design, a screen that almost covers its face and a new Face ID feature to verify a person's identity.
