Wayne Rooney's Old Trafford return spoilt by Antonio Valencia stunner

Antonio Valencia's early pile-driver gifted them an early lead, though for much of the game Everton looked unsafe.

United's record goalscorer was close to equalising in the first-half but he shot slightly wide, which was followed up again later in the match when he fired a shot straight at goalkeeper David de Gea.

"They wanted me, but a few things happened and I thought Everton would be the best place for me to come".

That was followed by a dramatic collapse as Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial secured a 4-0 win.

The result moves Jose Mourinho's side joint-top of the Premier League, alongside Manchester City, after five Premier League games.

The result at Old Trafford left Everton in the bottom three on goal difference after collecting just four points from five games and scoring only two goals.

Ronald Koeman says he is pleased by what he saw from his Everton team despite a 4-0 loss to Manchester United.

Koeman spent £142.38m to bring in nine new players over the summer, including Jordan Pickford, Michael Keane, Wayne Rooney and Gylfi Sigurdsson, who were all in the starting XI against United.

They began the season with a 1-0 win against Stoke City and drew away to Manchester City in their second game, but has since fallen to Chelsea, Tottenham and now Manchester United.

'City did their job, I was thinking about the others, and when I saw their results, I thought it was an opportunity we can not waste'.

United toiled for long periods and Everton could have equalised, but Lukaku felt the hosts deserved to win. It does not look too good at the moment but I know we are more than good enough to turn this around.

Mourinho was delighted with Lukaku's performance but made it clear that he would have been happy even if he did not score, as his work rate and understanding of the manager's tactical plan is sufficient.
