Atsu grabs first EPL goal in Newcastle's third straight win

Saved one and scored the victor at Swansea, then put away the decider against Stoke City, no wonder he is full of it.

Newcastle United defender Jamaal Lascelles has stated that he never doubted being retained as captain this season.

Joselu had 14 shots on goal against Stoke for Newcastle at the weekend.

Jamaal Lascelles summing up Saturday's performance: "Collectively it was a brilliant team performance and it's always nice to get on the scoresheet as well".

"But it wasn't just the goal, it was how they got the corner, that was sloppy from us as well. The opposition will not be up for it like we will be".

"We had more possession and they looked to counter-attack and it was a different test, one we had to cope with better".

"But everyone steps up, the 11 of us. He's been a great player for us so far".

"We have set our standards now and in the West Ham game we set our benchmark, now we need to maintain and improve from that, I think we have".

The 25-year old put the hosts in front from a wonderful Matt Ritchie ball in the first half.

"It is important that we progress in the competition, so we want to have a good run in it this season if we can".

The Magpies might have won more comfortably had former Stoke striker Joselu taken any of the three chances which came his way, although they were grateful to keeper Rob Elliot for three saves to deny Shaqiri twice and Mame Biram Diouf.

When you are doing well it's the time to stay focused and continue to work hard. If it was down the other end and I'd let a goal in and he went down the other end and scored, I'd have gone up to him and said the same. "Today we weren't quite there in terms of creativity in the last third".

"We can really get about the pitch and get down in people's boots", he added.
