Richard Branson's Caribbean Island Destroyed by Hurricane Irma

Nearly 500 British troops have been deployed to Caribbean islands ravaged by Hurricane Irma as Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon says the "relief operation is well under way".

He is 55-year old Derek Ragnath, formerly of Mahaica Public Road near the police station.

He had been stranded away from Tortola when Irma struck and his own home was one of the many severely damaged by the hurricane.

Now Grenfell is off the front pages but there is a risk that Hurricane Irma, causing devastation in the British Virgin Islands, could become her Katrina moment. This media house does not correct any spelling or grammatical error within press releases and commentaries.

Some 40,000 people live in the Dutch territory, where 70% of homes suffered extensive damage.

The U.K. government defended its response to Hurricane Irma yesterday, amid claims it has been slow to help British overseas territories devastated by the storm.

"They are all safe however my dad told me that the situation on the island is dire and the government response nearly invisible", she told the BBC. The National Emergency Management Agency plans to begin assessments early next week, but is receiving reports of extensive damage in Ragged Island. The worldwide airport also was scheduled to resume operations Sunday.

Countries are given a ranking according to need, which is meant to ensure the poorest countries take priority, and Anguilla, Turks and Caicos and the British Virgin Islands do not qualify because their incomes are too high.

The British Virgin Islands is a self-governing British overseas territory with the Queen as its head of state.

"That period of time is the time that we have to do whatever we need: water, food, gasoline", she said. But Irma has the potential to make landfall in Westminster because those suffering include Brits in the British Virgin Islands.

The gift came as the Foreign Office confirmed that more than half a million British nationals and holiday makers were caught in the path of the mega-storm last week.

On his arrival in Anguilla on Tuesday, which he will tour on Wednesday before travelling to the British Virgin Islands, Mr Johnson said it was "clear this place has been through an absolutely hellish experience".

The Florida Keys -- which according to the New York Times was hit the worst in the USA - has only just begun disaster assessment.

More than 1,000 military personnel are now in the region, with another 200 due to arrive within days, along with more than 60 police officers, she said.
