Trump on Irma: 'We've never seen anything like this'

In the path of the hurricane: US President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida.

Trump spoke briefly to reporters Friday before boarding Marine One to travel to Camp David for the weekend.

White House Director of Social Media Dan Scavino tweeted photos from the Sunday morning briefing, where Mr. Trump was also joined by First Lady Melania Trump and Karen Pence.

"I'm feeling better than being in my house, but I'm anxious about my home, about what's going to happen", Turner said.

Trump said the Cabinet would discuss North Korea's "latest provocative and destabilizing actions" and "the steps the United States will take to keep our people safe and, frankly, to keep the people of the world safe in this case".

However, an untold number of residents declined to leave; many said they had faced and survived similar storms many times before.

A spokesperson for the Trump Organization told weather.com in an email that the resort, as well as other Trump properties, were rigorously preparing for the storm.

The President reserved special praise for the Coast Guard and Federal Emergency Management Agency.

"Every resource of the federal government is being brought to bear to support state and local efforts", said Pence on Sunday. He reiterated that citizens need to heed the warnings of local officials either to shelter in place, if directed to do so, or evacuate.

The powerful, deadly storm, which was a Category 4 hurricane at 9 a.m. ET, is expected to slam into the southern coast of the state Sunday afternoon.

Trump added that he has approved emergency declarations in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

The White House released a almost five-minute YouTube video of Mr Trump speaking to Cabinet members at the start of the meeting.

"We are doing everything we can to help with disaster preparations and, when the time comes, recover and rebuild together as Americans". "We are praying for all those that have been affected by Hurricane Irma and we know there will be much rebuilding to do on this handsome island in the months and years ahead".

"That house has never been seriously damaged", Trump's long-time (and controversial) former butler Anthony Senecal said in an interview with the AP. "We will do it quickly".
