Another Reason To Evacuate Downtown Miami: Construction Cranes

Two high-rise construction cranes toppled over in downtown Miami on Sunday as intense gusts from Hurricane Irma lashed the city.

The deputy director of Miami's building department, Maurice Pons, said in the city's statement that he "would not advise staying in a building next to a construction crane during a major hurricane like Irma".

But Alfonso said the city was doing far better than expected when Irma was forecast to slam straight into Miami.

There were no immediate reports of any damage or injuries. "We will have a crew over to secure the crane as soon as the weather permits".

They are created to withstand winds up to 145 miles per hour, but not a Category 5 hurricane, when winds top 157 miles per hour, city officials said.

Authorities expressed concern earlier in the week as 25 cranes still stood in Miami during Irma. People also posted pictures of the cranes.

"AVOID THE AREA!" the city's tweet said.

Only a few contractors are certified to remove those cranes, and they would not have had enough time to move them out of harm's way even if they all were working at the same time in Miami to prepare for Irma, he said. The city even welcomed its first hurricane baby, when a mother delivered a girl in her home in Little Haiti with coaching from emergency responders over the phone.

Meantime, officials from Broward County report that a man fell to his death from a nine-story building while boarding up windows.

"Overall, we're faring fairly well considering what was coming", he said.
