United States pushing to cut off oil to North Korea with UN resolution

North Korea, the draft states, "shall immediately suspend all activities related to its ballistic missile program and ... immediately abandon all nuclear weapons and existing nuclear nuclear programs in a complete, verifiable and irreversible manner".

At an urgent meeting of the Security Council Monday, U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley told council members that the U.S. would seek to put a new resolution to a vote the following Monday after negotiations this week.

It would also freeze the assets and impose a travel ban on Kim Jong Un and four other top party officials, Hwang Pyong So, Kim Ki Nam, Kim Yo Jong, and Pak Yong Sik.

The proposed resolution would condemn "in the strongest terms" the latest nuclear test, which Pyongyang said was of a hydrogen bomb, calling it a "flagrant" violation of previous council resolutions banning all nuclear tests.

The United State's latest diplomatic gambit comes just days after North Korea on September 3 detonated its sixth, and by far its most powerful, nuclear explosion, triggering widespread expressions of condemnation from Beijing to Moscow and Washington, D.C. In response, the Trump administration is looking to target key economic sectors that contribute to pouring up to $3 billion-a-year in revenue into the North Korean economy - money that US policy-makers believe is funding its nuclear weapons program.

He told the AFP news agency that further sanctions were not the answer.

The sports great spoke of a possible resolution between Kim and Trump. "We must act with calm and avoid steps that could raise tensions".

Both countries are suppliers of oil to North Korea, and both wield vetoes at the Security Council.

"Without political and diplomatic tools, it is impossible to make headway in the current situation; to be more precise, it is impossible", said Putin at a news conference with Moon.

For there to be a war on the Korean peninsula, the United States will have to be the aggressor.

"It is not worth giving in to emotions and driving North Korea into a corner", he said.

President Trump has refused to rule out military action against North Korea, but says the use of military force against Pyongyang will not be his "first choice". He doesn´t want to see what´s happening there, either.
