Mobile Offers Free Netflix To Family Plan Subscribers

T-Mobile and MetroPCS customers in affected areas of Puerto Rico will get calls, texts, and unlimited data for free from September 6th through September 8th.

T-Mobile is giving credit for one $10/month Netflix Standard streaming plan to each eligible account.

The Netflix plan supports HD video, but not over T-Mobile's cellular network unless you have the One Plus plan. For instance, the company once gave free Domino's pizza to its customers through its "T-Mobile Tuesdays" scheme. Two active lines cost $120/month while three lines can make you shell out $140/month, four lines cost $160/month with taxes and fees. If you're on an older plan, the $100 per two-line promotional plan, or the 55+ senior plan, you need to switch up to the One or One Plus plans. For anyone already paying for Netflix and a T-Mobile One family plan, it's basically a $120-a-year price cut on your phone bill.

Cable providers once viewed Netflix as a competitive threat that stole subscribers, but they now view the streaming service as a sweetener to retain them. "Because we can", says T-Mobile CEO John Legere. That includes two simultaneous streams in HD.

There is a catch (as always): The perk is only offered to subscribers of the unlimited T-Mobile One plan with two or more active voice lines, which T-Mobile now sells for $120 a month with taxes and fees included.

What's your take on this new promotion by T-Mobile?

After a sluggish start to the trading day, shares of Netflix NFLX moved about 2.2% higher in the early afternoon hours on Wednesday. No specific terms of the agreement between T-Mobile and Netflix were released during the event or in the accompanying press release. To deliver even SD video, T-Mobile uses data compression to deliver your video using only 1.5Mbps.

However, other carriers have similar packages with streaming platforms.

T-Mobile shook up the industry with no-contract, monthly financing plans for mobile phone purchases.
