Kenyan presidential election results nullified by court

Odinga claimed that the electronic voting results were hacked into and manipulated in favour of Kenyatta.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta on Saturday said he and his party are ready for election as ordered by the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, Odinga told reporters the judges' decision "sets a precedent for the African continent", adding that the six members should be lauded for acting "for [the] posterity of Kenyans".

In his remarks immediately after the ruling, Mr. Odinga, who was in court together with his running mate Kalonzo Musyoka and other opposition leaders, congratulated the Supreme Court on the historic ruling.

Kenya is to hold another presidential election after the previous poll was declared invalid by the country's supreme court.

But, lawyers for the election commission and Kenyatta countered that errors were simply "clerical" mistakes and technicalities that did not affect the outcome of the vote.

Kenyan parliamentarian Kimani Ichungwa accused the opposition of intimidating the Supreme Court.

The court had declared that the election was marred by irregularities.

However he said the decision had to be respected.

Ms Schaake said the monitors were awaiting the full details of the ruling.

"Kenya just had a hard and controversial election, and this decision pushes it right back into another electoral campaign", said analyst Nic Cheeseman of the University of Birmingham.

Kenya's president is promising to "fix" the judicial system in the country a day after the Supreme Court nullified his re-election.

However, Kenyatta says he would respect the decision and urged citizens to do the same.

Maraga said this had compromised the "integrity of the entire presidential election". Just days before the August 8 vote, key election official Chris Msando was killed.

It said these issues would be elaborated on in the detailed judgment of the court, which is to be published within 21 days.

Odinga has contested the last three elections and lost each time.

As news of the court's decision spread, cheers and celebrations could be heard on the streets in parts of the capital, Nairobi.

Mr Kwarteng fears that the incumbent governemnt may take advantage of their incumbency through the electoral commission.
