Halo is coming to Microsoft's Windows Mixed Reality platform

While the list of developers is significant and growing, one name stands out: 343 Industries, which will be bringing "Halo experiences" to Windows Mixed Reality.

Ahead of IFA 2017 (starts this Friday 1 Sept) Microsoft has provided an update about what Windows Mixed Reality (VR & AR) hardware and software to expect in time for Xmas.

As we know, uninhibited, inside-out tracking experience is something Microsoft has pushed for during this broad foray into hardware, though initially this will apply to virtual reality, despite the mixed reality branding. And until now we have already seen the Windows Mixed Reality Headsets from partners like Acer, HP and Lenovo. Competitor VR headsets like the Oculus and HTC Vive need to be plugged into high-end PCs with dedicated graphics cards, which can range from $799 to upwards of $3,000, to provide a high enough frame refresh rate that avoids making users nauseous.

"Mixed Reality is the future, and we want everyone on the journey with us", said Kipman. In its latest blog post Microsoft confirms that Steam VR content will run on Windows Mixed Reality headsets.

Internally, it sports the same specs as other mixed reality headsets.

USA TODAY's Marco Della Cava demonstrates how Microsoft's augmented reality headset shows how one day we may only interact with digital content in holographic form. Use your Windows Mixed Reality motion controllers to enjoy a world of discovery and imagination this holiday.

Moving around is accomplished through triggers on the handsets, which takes some getting used to if you're not a gamer.

Microsoft announced its HoloLens technology at a Windows 10 event in January 2015, and it has slowly pushed the technology out to developers and a limited set of vertical markets.

NanoEdge 4K UHD or Full HD touchscreen display has 178° wide-view technology and precision-stylus support, flawless for drawing on and highlighting web pages in Microsoft Edge or using with Windows Ink. Even though I couldn't see the controllers or my own hands, I could see virtual representations of the controllers in the VR view. Windows Mixed Reality has a pair of modes: regular and "Ultra". It, too, was connected to an Acer Mixed Reality headset, but instead of controllers, I get a single Xbox controller.

Meanwhile, prices of mixed reality-capable PCs begin at $499. In other words, Microsoft has to prepare for an intense competition.
