Nth Korea fires missiles into Sea of Japan

"The second missile launch at 12:07pm appears to have blown up nearly immediately", Pacific Command said, using times at its Hawaii-based headquarters.

President Moon Jae-in was set to meet with the chairman of the U.S. House foreign relations committee Monday, officials from the presidential office Cheong Wa Dae said, for discussions on various issues that will likely include North Korea's missile provocations and nuclear ambitions.

The North fired "several unidentified projectiles" from the vicinity of Kitdaeryong in Kangwon Province starting at around 6:49 am, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

South Korea's presidential office held a National Security Council meeting to discuss the missiles, which are the first known launches since July, when the North successfully flight tested a pair of intercontinental ballistic missiles that analysts say could reach deep into the USA mainland when perfected.

"It is presumptuous of South Korea's leader to talk about a red line even as its master (the United States) does not dare to bring about", the Rodong Sinmun, the country's main newspaper, said in a commentary.

The missiles appeared to be short-range, unlike the intercontinental ones capable of reaching the mainland U.S. that North Korea fired last month.

The US State Department did not immediately comment about the Saturday missile launches. The Chinese air drills coincided USA reconnaissance flights over the Korean peninsula following Kim Jong-un's Guam threat.

This week, the United States and Japan placed new sanctions on entities and individuals that support North Korea, in countries such as China and Russian Federation.

The US is now in the middle of its annual joint military exercise with South Korea, that the North has called an invasion rehearsal.

U.S. President Donald Trump earlier this month warned that North Korea would be met with "fire and fury" if it threatens the United States.

North Korea is developing a new type of nuclear-tipped missile capable of reaching any point in the mainland United States, according to photographs released by state media.

The projectiles flew about 250 kilometers (155 miles) into the Sea of Japan, or East Sea, the Saturday statement said.

On Wednesday, Kim ordered the production of more rocket engines and missile warheads during a visit to a chemical institute of the Academy of Defence Science, an agency that he fostered to develop its ballistic missile programme.
