Killer Nurse May Have Killed 84 Others With Drugs Causing Heart Failure

A nurse who was convicted of killing two patients and trying to kill two more, may have had many more victims.

He was sentenced two charges of endeavored murder and two checks of murder by an Oldenburg court in 2015.

The cause of death in many more could not be determined because the remains were cremated، said Oldenburg police chief Johann Kuehme.

Niels Hoegel, a German nurse, is believed to have been responsible for killing 84 people, local media reported Monday, citing recently revealed investigation results.

The crimes came to light after Hoegel was convicted of attempted murder in another case.

According to investigators, however, the real number of victims is likely to be many times higher, but it cannot be proven because some of the deceased were cremated. Authorities subsequently investigated hundreds of deaths and exhumed former patients in Delmenhorst and Oldenburg.

Kuehme added that if authorities acted sooner, some of these deaths could have been prevented.

"Eighty-four killings ... leave us speechless", Kuehme told reporters. He worked at a clinic in Delmenhorst, an urban district in Lower Saxony, at the time, ITV reported. "And as if all that were not enough, we must realise that the real dimension of the killings by Niels H is likely many times worse".

Authorities are already pursuing criminal cases against former staff at the two facilities.

Hoegel admitted during his trial that he caused cardiac crises in approximately 90 patients so could resuscitate them.

A German nurse is suspected of murdering 84 patients by injecting poison into their bodies.

It found that Hoegel had administered lethal injections to patients at a hospital in Oldenburg, where he worked from 1999 to 2001.

The victims' names have not been released.
