White House to give guidance on Trump transgender military ban

White House to give guidance on Trump transgender military ban

The Wall Street Journal reported that the White House is expected to send its memo to the Pentagon in the coming days.

The memo also gives Mattis the ability to remove trans individuals now serving in the military by considering their "deployability" - whether or not they can serve in war zones and participate in training.

"At this time, [the Defense Department] has not received formal guidance from the White House as a follow-up to the commander in chief's announcement on military service by transgender personnel", said Army Lt. Col. Paul Haverstick, a Pentagon spokesman. It also orders the Pentagon to stop paying for transgender service members' medical treatments.

Trump had announced in July this year that transgenders, in any capacity, won't be allowed to serve the military saying that their inclusion would entail "disruption" in the military affairs.

"The courageous and resilient transgender people who serve and have served our nation deserve to be honored, not denigrated, called a "disruption", and subjected to discriminatory reviews of their "deployability".

Mattis has six months to implement the ban as directed.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi responded to The Wall Street Journal's report with a tweet on Wednesday night: "This is not how you keep America safe". A study commissioned just previous year by the military found medical costs associated with transgender service members represent a mere fraction of the military's medical costs and less than a thousandth of 1 percent of the Defense Department's total annual budget.

Out trans former Navy SEAL Kristin Beck challenged President Trump to tell her to her face that she is "not worthy" after he announced the policy.

But Mr. Mattis and the Pentagon's military leadership all seemed to have accepted that transgender people already serving in the military would be allowed to remain. This backward transgender military ban is expected to begin within the next 6 Months.

In a follow-up statement, the President said he has "great respect for the community" but that he thinks he is doing a "great favour" to the military by attempting to ban trans people from serving openly.

"Transgender service members do their jobs, serving the country they love, and are no less able to serve and deploy than anyone else".
