Blast investigated at Bloomington Islamic Center

Executive Director Mohamed Omar told KEYC News, "One of our congregation members came out immediately and he saw a truck fleeing from the parking lot, running at very high speed".

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was investigating the blast and saidthat "Improvised explosive device" caused the explosion, according to a CNN report.

Governor Mark Dayton said Saturday's explosion at an Islamic center in Bloomington was "an act of terror".

He said the imam's window was broken and a small fire bomb was thrown inside.

A blast interrupted worshippers at the Dar Al-Farooq Islamic Center in Bloomington, Minnesota Saturday morning around 5am.

"The incident is a symptom of the growing atmosphere of Islamophobia in the USA", the group's communication director, Ibrahim Hooper, said. While the explosion caused some damage, no one was killed in the attack that occurred during Saturday morning prayers.

"We must all unite to stand against them as Americans who cherish the ability to worship freely, and who cherish the ability of our neighbors to do the same". He says investigators have recovered components of the device to figure how it was put together.

"The swift apprehension and punishment of the perpetrator will send a clear message that attacks on mosques, or on any other American houses of worship, will not be tolerated", said CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad.

The bombing took place at a time when anti-Muslim incidents have been rising in the United States, according to the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

"At this point our focus is to determine who and why", FBI Special Agent Rick Thornton said in a press conference.

The mosque has been the subject of consternation among some members of the local community since it opened in 2011.

The mosque mostly serves people in Minnesota's Somali community. The Department of Homeland Security is also keeping an eye on the investigation. The Islamic society has offered $10,000 reward for information that can help track the suspect.

According to an analysis by the Council on American-Islamic Relations in May, 2,213 anti-Muslim bias incidents occurred in the United States previous year, up 57 percent from 2015, according to Reuters.
