Milan among 19 cities vying to host EMA post-Brexit

Milan is among 19 European cities competing to host the European Medicines Agency (EMA), which will relocate from London after the United Kingdom leaves the EU.

Brussels is one of the candidate cities to host the two European agencies now based in London.

Delegations from interested countries visit other European Union member states and try to win them over.

The Irish application was officially submitted on Monday ahead of a midnight deadline.

However, the only cities in the running for both agencies are Dublin, Brussels, Vienna and Warsaw.

"We will now proceed in assessing all offers in an objective manner", said European Commission spokeswoman Mina Andreeva. Competition is likely to be intense with the medicines agency employing 900 people and the banking agency having 159 staff.

The European Commission's assessment will consider criteria such as accessibility for current employees, work opportunities for their spouses and schools for their children.

It can also be found on the list Amsterdam, Athens, Barcelona, Bratislava, Bucharest, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Milan, Porto, Sofia, Stockholm, Malta and Zagreb. France with Paris and Lille, Germany with Frankfurt and Bonn, Austria, Ireland, Hungary and Poland are bidding for the two, although no one country will be allowed to get both.

The Grand Duchy, whose economy is based on financial services and which already hosts the Court of Justice of the EU, the Court of Auditors, the European Investment Bank and the European Stability Mechanism, says it is "the natural choice" for the EBA.

In the past, races for such agencies became heated, but European Union diplomats have said they are keen to avoid disrupting the unity the bloc has found over Brexit.

A political discussion in October will precede the private vote in November.

The competition will be fierce for the AEM, which has almost 900 employees: 19 cities have applied.

Its visitors to generate bookings of nearly 9000 hotel nights per year.
