US Navy Ship Fires Warning Shots Over Iranian Patrol Boats

In January this year, a US navy ship fired warning shots at five Iranian ships when the vessel and two other USA ships were entering the Strait of Hormuz.

Updated | A Navy warship fired warning shots Tuesday at an Iranian military vessel in the Persian Gulf after it reportedly came too close.

The last incident similar in nature occurred in January, when the USS Mahan naval destroyer fired three warning shots at four Iranian fast-attack vessels near the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. Navy again has accused Iranian patrol boats of harassing an American warship in the Persian Gulf, this time with one Iranian Revolutionary Guard vessel stopping right in front of the USS Firebolt and almost causing a collision.

A USA official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the Iranian boat was armed but that the weapons were unmanned.

The incident is the latest in a series of close encounters between ships from the USA and Iran. "He did not respond to signals or calls, the patrol had no other choice than to fire warning shots", said to the AFP that is responsible, under the cover of anonymity. And in August, the USS Squall fired warning shots into waters ahead of a speeding Iranian boat to warn the small craft that it had come within 200 yards of the US ship. In January, a Navy destroyer fired warning shots at several Iranian attack boats that the USA military claimed ignored prior warnings in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran and the USA frequently have tense naval encounters in the Persian Gulf. It became a propaganda coup for Iran's hard-liners, as Iranian state television repeatedly aired footage of the Americans on their knees, their hands on their heads.

Iranian forces view the American presence in the Gulf as a provocation by itself.
