Opposition protests suspension of 6 Cong MPs from Lok Sabha

The suspension order was issued by Sumitra Mahajan while the Congress president Sonia Gandhi was present in the house.

Staff Reporter GUWAHATI, July 25 - The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) today hailed the role played by Congress MPs in the Lok Sabha yesterday on the issue of cow vigilantes.

Though opposition members protested loudly in the Well of the House, question hour was held, with the Speaker Sumitra Mahajan adamant on conducting the House, saying that she would like to see "how much indiscipline was possible".

Party MPs are Gaurav Gogoi, K. Suresh, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary, Ranjeet Ranjan, Sushmita Dev and M K Raghavan.

In the melee, that continued through zero hour, papers were torn and thrown towards the Well of the House.

The Opposition members demanded the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's presence to discuss the incidents of lynching in the name of cow protection. When the House commenced at 11 am, the Speaker tactically averted a showdown by adjourning the proceedings till 3 pm to facilitate MPs to attend the swearing-in ceremony of President Ram Nath Kovind.

The members from the Congress party trooped into the well of the House shouting and agitating and flinging pieces of paper toward the treasury benches and also the House chair.

The Congress leader also alleged that there was corruption in Food Corporation of India (FCI) and National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED).

The Congress MPs raised the issue through an adjournment motion moved by their Leader in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge.

While adjourning the House till 2:30 pm, Mahajan said that the MPs did not stop despite her repeated requests to them to return to their seats and instead, indulged in the improper conduct.

Prabhat Jha of BJP hit back at Singh and said that Madhya Pradesh (ruled by the BJP) is the first state to implement the MS Swaminathan report. And upholding this democratic tradition, six Congress MPs have invited the wrath of the LS Speaker.
