New York Times asks 'Fox & Friends' for apology

Thomas told Fox that the US was close to capturing ISIS leader Abu Bakr al Baghdadi until a lead about the capture was published in The New York Times, which caused the lead to go dead, he told Fox. The newspaper called the network's report linking it to intelligence leaks back in 2015 "malicious and inaccurate". The "Fox and Friends" segment aired early Saturday and may have been the story that lead the President to tweet later Saturday saying the newspaper values "their sick agenda over National Security".

Herridge, one of two reporters who wrote the story that mentions the New York Times' article, later appears in the May 17 show, according to the posted transcript. If Thomas was wrong, the paper should take its case to him, not to Fox News. Thomas said the raid garnered a valuable lead that could have led the U.S.to al-Baghdadi but it went cold after it was leaked "in a prominent USA newspaper" about a week later.

It issued a statement slamming The New York Times for its delayed reaction: "For all of their hyperventilating to the media about a correction, the New York Times didn't reach out to anyone at Fox News until Sunday afternoon for a story that ran Friday night".

Though Thomas did not specifically name the New York Times, during Saturday's Fox & Friends Weekend show, a Fox host called the publication out by name and questioned its validity.

Furthermore, the Times said it stretches credulity to think the security-conscious al-Baghdadi would not have taken steps to protect himself more than three weeks after learning about the raid.

On Monday morning, the TV network once again spoke about the issue, saying, "The Times described its 2015 reporting to the Pentagon before publication and they had no objections, and no senior American officials have ever complained publicly, until now".

Fox host Pete Hegseth repeatedly referred to the "failing" New York Times, echoing the descriptive phrase the Republican president frequently uses.

In a wide-ranging interview moderated by Fox News' Catherine Herridge, Thomas, who leads the Special Operations Command, said his team was "particularly close" to Baghdadi after the 2015 raid that killed ISIS oil minister Abu Sayyaf.

"It's failing the American people", co-host Abby Huntsman said. "You want to read the entire statement?"

Fox, in a statement, said neither its initial report nor subsequent coverage on the air was inaccurate. Tony Thomas asserting that a June 8, 2015, report in the Times about a raid in Syria cost military intelligence a lead that could have led to the capture of the ISIS leader known as Abu Sayyaf. The network suggested the Times should check to see whether Thomas' comments have merit and whether anything revealed in its report hindered USA operations.
