Violence over Jerusalem holy site kills 6

Other clashes between angry Palestinian youths and Israeli forces broke out in several cities across the West Bank after Friday prayers.

The AP, citing Israeli media, reported that the attacker was shot and wounded.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas cut off all official contacts with Israel over the detectors, and the measures have been condemned by majority-Muslim countries.

Three Palestinians were killed and hundreds wounded in the clashes in Jerusalem and the West Bank.

Israel chose to install the metal detectors at the entry point to the shrine in Jerusalem's walled Old City on Sunday, after the killing of two Israeli policemen on July 14.

Three Israeli settlers were killed Friday in an alleged stabbing attack in the occupied West Bank, according to the Israeli military. It is also Judaism's holiest site, once home to biblical Temples.

On Friday, Israeli security forces put additional restrictions on entry to the al-Aqsa mosque, the Guardian reported, turning away women and men over the age of 50.

Citing Guterres, UN deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said the organisation understands "legitimate security concerns, but on the other hand it is important that the status quo at the site be retained".

Since Israel captured the Old City it has remained committed to that formula.

Crowds gathered outside Jerusalem's Old City found shops closed and streets around Damascus Gate, the entrance most heavily used by Palestinians, blocked.

The site is know to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary and to Jews as the Temple Mount.

The envoys of the Middle East Quartet - the United States, Russia, the European Union and the United Nations - said in a statement they are "deeply concerned by the escalating tensions and violent clashes taking place in and around the Old City of Jerusalem".

Muslim leaders have portrayed the metal detectors as part of a purported Israeli campaign to expand its control over the shrine - a claim Israel denies.

In recent years, religious opinion has shifted, and growing numbers of Jews are visiting the compound.

"Jerusalem is a red line", Ahmed Abu Al Gheit said, adding that "no Arab or Muslim will accept violations" against Jerusalem's holy sites.

Officials say protests were expected at the Old City site where Israeli police have recently installed security devices, after two police officers were killed there by Arab gunmen.
