Woman killed outside Church queuing to vote in Venezuela

The symbolic plebiscite was aimed at denting Maduro's legitimacy further amid a crippling economic crisis that has left millions struggling to eat and months of anti-government unrest that has killed almost 100 people.

"Today, Venezuela said yes to a dignified country, a democratic country, a country where people do not have to go because they have no future".

Maduro's opponents are pressuring him to drop a plan to rewrite the constitution and hold early elections.

In the referendum, Venezuelans were asked to respond "yes" or "no" to three questions.

The MUD sees establishment of the ANC, which will rewrite the Constitution, as a power grab by President Nicolas Maduro.

Amid ongoing turmoil, an overwhelming majority of those who voted in an unofficial referendum organized by Venezuela's opposition has rejected the motion of leftist President Nicolas Maduro to change the constitution and supplant the opposition-leadning Parliament with a "Constituent Assembly".

Colombia's former President Andres Pastrana, left, embraces Lilian Tintori, left after a news conference of global observers of a symbolic referendum in Caracas, Venezuela, Sunday, July 16, 2017.

A total of 7,186,170 Venezuelans participated in the unofficial referendum on Sunday despite it not being backed by the government, reports Efe news.

The opposition also said the country's National Assembly, which it controls, would name new members to the government-dominated Supreme Court, setting up a showdown with President Nicolas Maduro, whose party controls almost all other state institutions.

Venezuela's opposition Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) coalition claimed the high turnout - about a third of the 19 million eligible voters - provided a mandate for them to challenge Maduro.

A dry run of that election was also held Sunday, to detract from the opposition vote which the government branded "illegal".

Speaking at an afternoon news conference, opposition leader Freddy Guevara made little mention of more protests, however, a sign that the opposition had chose to change tactics in the wake of Sunday's vote.

The turnout is slightly smaller than the 7.7 million people who voted for opposition candidates at the 2015 parliamentary elections. The people expressed themselves and told the Executive what they want: they want peace.

"They (MUD) have a quiet consultation today (.) I tell them not to go insane, we make a call for them to return to peace, to sit down and talk, to begin a new cycle of dialogue for peace", said Maduro during a telephone interview with the state-owned Venezolana de Televisión.

Venezuelan bishops have warned that President Maduro is seeking to establish a "socialist, Marxist and militaristic" state as tensions continue to rise in the Latin American country. Attorney General Luisa Ortega broke ranks with the government over the constituent assembly and the erosion of democracy under the Maduro government.

Some supporters said they were disappointed.

"I signed because there's no medicine, no food, no security", she said. Opposition leaders said that was because they were only able to set up 2,000 polling places in a symbolic exercise the government labeled as illegitimate.

The National Assembly - also controlled by the opposition - says it will name new members of the country's supreme court, a move certain to be blocked by Maduro's administration.
