Kermit the Frog's Puppeteer Leaves the Muppets

Whitmire had voiced the iconic amphibian since the death of "Muppets" creator Jim Henson in 1990. Now it seems that the news has been confirmed, and his replacement is Muppets veteran 46-year-old Matt Vogel.

Steve Whitmire, the actor who's been bringing Kermit to life since 1990, is no longer with the Muppets, according to numerous reports.

Muppets performer Matt Vogel will take over from Whitmire.

He will be making his first appearance on "Muppets Thought of the Week" next week, though it is unlikely you will be able to spot any difference to the actual voice.

Steve Whitmire, the long-time puppeteer and voice of Kermit the Frog, Rizzo the Rat, Statler, and Beaker, is reportedly no longer involved with the Muppets.

Children's TV shows have survived changes in key cast members before, most notably when Elmo puppeteer Kevin Clash resigned from "Sesame Street" in 2012 amid allegations that he sexually abused underage boys. He'd also portrayed several "Fraggle Rock" characters and appeared in Henson movies "Labyrinth" and "The Dark Crystal".

Similarly, fans expressed on Twitter that they were "devastated" and "crushed" over news of Whitmire's departure.

News agencies tried to reach out to Disney, which owns Muppets Studio, but no statement has been released regarding the move.

Meanwhile, Vogel has been a Muppet performer since 1996. In addition to playing Constantine, he has taken on classic Muppet characters Lew Zealand, Floyd Pepper, and the Count.
