Emergency brakes went on before NYC derailment

C train service is suspended between Euclid Ave and 168th Street in both directions.

Video images on television showed ambulances at the 125th Street station in Manhattan around 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Passengers on the A train said it suddenly jerked and began shaking violently as it approached the station at 125th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue.

"This, to the best of my knowledge, does not look like a failure on the part of equipment, does not look like a failure on the part of the track itself", Lhota said.

It opened in 2009, replacing an outmoded station that had room for only the first half of a 10-car subway train.

The MTA is still investigating the cause of Monday's derailment, which prompted about 500 people to evacuate four trains in Harlem, according to the FDNY.

Three other trains were in the tunnel at the time of the derailment, he said.

The Fire Department of NY and Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials said an A train derailed and hit a wall near 125th Street along St. Nicholas Avenue just before 10 a.m. Tuesday. MTA officials said the train made an emergency stop, which damaged the tracks, signal switches and the wall next to the train.

"The emergency brakes automatically went on".

Passengers were evacuated and employees of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) arrived on the scene to examine the auto.

He said there was white smoke, and "there was a lot of banging around in that auto - it was really bad". Initially people panicked a little bit then and we realized we had to move.

Julian Robinson said he was stuck on one of them for about an hour before rescuers arrived to escort passengers along the tracks into the station. It said there was smoke, but no fire.

Governor Andrew Cuomo, who controls the MTA board, has not issued a statement on the accident.

Commuter railroads also have had problems.

Social media users posted that they have been stuck on subway trains for over an hour until emergency crews came in to evacuate them.

The MTA confirmed the accident, tweeting: 'Service disruptions on ABCD trains due to power failure & derailment.
