Senate jabs Trump in unanimous vote on North Atlantic Treaty Organisation

Following yesterday's vote on an amendment adding substantial sanctions against Russian Federation to the bill, the Senate today voted to pass the bill, which was designed primarily to impose a number of new sanctions on Iran for "non-nuclear" moves that the Senate objects to.

Senators are optimistic Trump won't veto them.

'This is a very, very strong piece of legislation, ' Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman Bob Corker said on the Senate floor.

The measure also asserts a role for Congress if the White House opts to ease any sanctions against Moscow. The bill, which includes both Russian and Iranian sanctions, now heads to the House, which still needs to pass it before it goes to President Donald Trump's desk. Rand Paul and independent Sen.

But as the inquiries examine whether members of Trump's campaign discussed easing sanctions on Russian Federation after Trump won the election, Congress is hitting the brakes on any possibility of warmer relations with the country that's U.S. intelligence agencies say tried to meddle in the United States democratic process.

The lone dissenters on the bill were Sens.

Still, Corker and other Republicans said they expect Trump to sign the bill if it's passed by the House. Bernie Sanders, the former Democratic presidential candidate.

Trump announced at a news conference last week that he would support Article 5 after he failed to mention it in a speech at North Atlantic Treaty Organisation headquarters last month. The article, known as the collective-defense clause, stipulates that an attack on any member is an attack on all. "I find as we get to the finish line on these bills, every administration generally joins us ... so I think we'll have the support of the administration".

The sanctions follow the scandalous departure of Michael Flynn as Trump's national security advisor.

The measure, which was approved 97-2 - Sens.

Graham said the vote "should reassure our allies and give notice to our enemies that America stands firmly in support of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and our Article 5 commitment". The bill also mandates sanctions for individuals involved with Iran's ballistic missile endeavors.

"You add up, without firing a shot or shooting a missile, the amount of disruption the Russians have caused in Western societies at large - all that for less than 5 percent of the cost of a new aircraft carrier", Warner said. "The Foreign Affairs Committee is reviewing the details in this latest sanctions package being voted on in the Senate, and after that we will determine a path ahead in the House".
