White House denies Trump wants Mueller out, but heat's on

The only man who can fire special counsel Robert Mueller, the man charged with investigating Russian interference in the us election and possible collusion with Trump's campaign, says he sees no good cause to do so. If Mr. Rosenstein refused, Mr. Trump could fire him, too - a series of events that would recall the "Saturday Night Massacre" during Watergate, when President Richard M. Nixon sought to dismiss a special prosecutor, Archibald Cox.

"The people in the administration were quick to reach out to me and say Chris Ruddy doesn't speak for this administration", Scarborough said.

Ruddy, who is a friend of the president's, said on PBS Monday, "I think [Trump is] considering perhaps terminating the special counsel..."

Here's why. According to the rules, technically only the attorney general can fire a special counsel.

Rosenstein is appearing before the appropriations subcommittee that oversees the Department of Justice's budget because Attorney General Jeff Sessions cancelled his scheduled appearance after agreeing to appear before the Senate Intelligence Committee Tuesday. He added later: "As long as I'm in this position, he's not going to be fired without good cause", which he said he would have to put in writing. However, Ruddy also emphasized that he did not think the president would be wise in dismissing Mueller, especially since there has been a lot of negative buzz in the media regarding the lack of justification from Trump when he fired former FBI Director James Comey. Still, Gingrich said any special counsel with an agenda can "all of the sudden find something procedural and technical to latch onto". "I think there's a conflict there".

He is scheduled to testify before two congressional hearings on Tuesday and is likely to face even more pointed questions about the Russian Federation probe and the independence of the Justice Department in light of Ruddy's comments.

Trump's allies have begun raising questions about the former FBI director's impartiality, suggesting he can not be trusted to lead the investigation.

"No, I have not", he said.

Justice Department spokesman Ian Prior declined to comment on the possibility of Trump seeking to remove Mueller.

Then Ruddy spread out, like a banquet, what will be Trump's argument for sacking Mueller, the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director under Barack Obama and George W. Bush.

But the president's allies have since changed their opinion, calling for Mueller to be removed as the special counsel, stating that he shares a close friendship with Comey for the last 15 years. Ruddy seemed to derive his assessment at least in part from comments Jay Sekulow, a member of Trump's legal, made over the weekend on ABC News' "This Week".

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, an informal Trump adviser, tweeted on Monday (Tuesday NZT), "Republicans are delusional if they think the special counsel is going to be fair". He is the Acting Attorney General in this case. I never said that the President told me.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer said on June 6 that he had "not discussed" whether Trump felt comfortable with Mueller as special counsel.
