Men Arrested in Connection With Violence Outside Turkish Embassy

The Turkish Foreign Ministry summoned USA envoy to Ankara, John Bass over the U.S.' decision to issue arrest warrants against President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's security guards and some Turkish citizens after the incident which took place in Washington.

The U.S. State Department said it is committed to holding those responsible for the violence accountable.

Two men had also been arrested at the scene of the clash on charges of aggravated assault and assaulting a police officer.

Twelve Turkish security agents are set to be charged on Thursday over their alleged involvement in a brutal physical attack on demonstrators in Washington DC in May, during the visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Turkey's USA embassy alleged the demonstrators were associated with the PKK, which has waged a three-decade-long insurgency against Turkey and is considered a terrorist group by the United States.

"We all saw the violence that was perpetrated against the protesters", Newsham said.

The men, all Turkish citizens, include nine Erdogan security guards and three Turkish police. Officials arrested two Americans, Eyup Yildirim and Sinan Narin, on Wednesday.

Police said they would release images of the suspects who they had not been able to identify.

Video of the fracas shows Turkish security aides beating demonstrators and kicking those some on the ground repeatedly in the head. "We support them to make sure they are safe".

The US had voiced "strongest possible" concern to Turkey over the street brawl that erupted between protesters and Turkish security personnel in May, injuring 11 people.

Addressing a question whether law enforcement believes that Mr. Erdogan ordered the attacks, the police chief said they didn't have enough evidence at the moment to bring up charges.

The New York Times reported that officials in the United States administration were privately furious over the brazen use of force against peaceful protesters -and Washington DC police officers - by Erdogan's men, and that the charges against them is part of the American punishment for the incident. [District Police Chief Peter] Newsham added that the personnel will be arrested if they attempt to enter the U.S. When asked about the footage, Newsham said his department did not have "probable cause" to arrest the Turkish president.

Last month, a protest outside the Turkish ambassador's residence in Washington D.C. turned bloody when pro-Erdogan security forces roughed up the activists outside. Police and other officials say various members of visiting Erdogan's security team, some of them armed, attacked a group protesting his regime as police struggled to restore order and bystanders recorded with phones.

The incident has certainly raised tensions with Turkey, and American officials may continue to be disappointed with their attacks on protesters.

It was not the first time Mr Erdogan's bodyguards had become violent while visiting the United States. The men in suits could be seen repeatedly stomping one woman as she lay curled on a sidewalk.
