Ken Starr: Not Enough Evidence for Trump Obstruction Case

Starr on Thursday also said he believes it's within Trump's rights to fire Mueller, and said that he himself could have been fired "for good cause" back when he was investigating Clinton.

"Why isn't the House Intelligence Committee looking into the Bill & Hillary deal that allowed big Uranium to go to Russia", he tweeted in March, adding in a second message, "Trump Russia story is a hoax".

"They made up a phony collusion with the Russians story, found zero proof, so now they go for obstruction of justice on the phony story".

Mueller is also reportedly investigating whether Trump associates committed financial crimes.

In a pair of earlier tweets, Trump called the investigation "phony" and the "greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history". Trump reportedly considered firing Mueller as special counsel, but was talked out of it by aides who anxious about the consequences of taking such an action.

Once Comey was sacked, the Department of Justice appointed Mueller as special counsel to act as an independent investigator.

In response to reports that Trump is facing a criminal investigation, Mark Corallo, spokesman for Trump's personal lawyer, Marc Kasowitz, said in a statement, "The FBI leak of information regarding the president is outrageous, inexcusable, and illegal".

Following reports that U.S. Department of Justice special counsel will be examining Trump for obstructing justice disrupted in the probe into Russian involvement in the US election campaign, US President Donald Trump turned to Twitter today (Thursday) to attack former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Trump was alluding to the former secretary of state's handling of her private email server, an issue that dogged the Democratic nominee's presidential campaign since before it officially began.

But Comey would reopen the investigation in the final weeks of the presidential campaign after the discovery of hundreds of emails from Clinton on the computer of her aide Huma Abedin.
