Navalny was arrested, along with hundreds of others, and was jailed for 15 days after being convicted of disobeying a police officer.

On everyone's lips is the huge protest on Monday to demand an inquiry into corruption at the highest echelons of power.

Meanwhile Navalny's YouTube channel, which had been broadcasting live to more than 50,000 people as protests across Russian Federation got underway, lost light and sound in the studio.

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, a top critic of Vladimir Putin, was arrested Monday on his way to an unsanctioned protest, the Associated Press reported.

Navalny said contractors hired to build a stage at the agreed-upon venue couldn't do their work. Authorities in Moscow, the location of what is expected to be the largest protest, authorized a venue well away from the city center.

A spokeswoman for Navalny said electricity has been cut off at his offices in Moscow.

The General Prosecutor's Office warned that a protest there would be illegal and police would be forced to take "all necessary measures" to prevent disorder.

The anti-corruption activist and presidential hopeful has also called for protests in more than 200 cities across Russian Federation, which is celebrating a public holiday.

By calling crowds into the very centre of Moscow, Alexei Navalny has set the stage for a confrontation.

At least four people were detained on June 12 in the city of Blagoveshchensk, including the organizer of the unauthorized protests there, according to OVD-Info, a site that tracks protests and police actions in Russian Federation. More than 1,000 people were arrested at a similar rally organised by Navalny in March.

Navalny's Fund for Fighting Corruption had been providing updates on protests throughout the country Monday.

Navalny, Russia's most prominent opposition figure, has been arrested numerous times for a variety of accused crimes. He had also demanded that Russia's Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev tender his resignation.

The demonstration is the second mass action since March 26 called by Navalny, who has announced his intention to run for president next year and has drawn a new generation to the streets through a relentless online campaign. In April, he suffered damage to one eye after an attacker doused his face with a green antiseptic liquid.
