England's Joe Hart catches flak for missing late free kicks

Harry Kane was left beaming after scoring a dramatic equaliser in his first game as captain to earn England a 2-2 World Cup qualifying draw against Scotland on Saturday.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain looked to have set England on course for victory, only for Celtic forward Leigh Griffiths to level with a late free-kick and repeat the trick moments later.

If we had kept the ball better going towards their goal we might have nicked the three points, but you can't switch off against this England side with guys like Harry Kane up top.

It kept an unimpressive England on course for next summer's World Cup in Russian Federation and dealt a savage blow to Scotland's already dwindling chances, BBC reports. "We have four games left and we could win all of them".

"As a football player you get on with it, but as a manager that was hard work", added the Scotland boss.

Urged on by the Hampden Park faithful, Scotland started on the front foot, Griffiths sending a shot down Joe Hart's throat in the early stages.

"We have to be a team that are never beaten, maybe the clock runs out but you never, ever stop and today we have done that".

However, Strachan said he was "too exhausted to think about where we are, I just want to go home".

Scotland's deep-lying 5-4-1 system starved England's creative players of space, but gradually cracks began to appear. There was a free kick we shouldn't concede and then two moments of real quality from Griffiths. And they keep coming back again.

"And then a noise after that, that I have never heard anything like before".

"Overall the objective is to qualify and we are top of the group".

"But we played a team with five at the back, tried to frustrate which is understandable from their point of view". That was beyond the call of duty.

Kane's goal was the Tottenham Hotspur striker's sixth in 18 global appearances and came at the end of his first game under Southgate, after injuries had kept him out of England's six previous matches. He's a great character, you know, a wonderful character.

"It is annoying for them".

Gordon Strachan, Scotland's manager, spoke of "Scotland's best ever free-kick, then their second ever best free-kick".

"That was the one, at 60 years old, that could have been the best result of my footballing career", Strachan said on ITV1.

"You try to protect yourself from the excitement but when we equalised I didn't, because that could have been my best result as a manger".
