Bill Maher apologizes on air: Racial slur 'has caused pain'

To be fair to Maher, he was pretty contrite about the whole thing and Cube spoke his piece with honesty and admitted that while he was a fan of Maher and his show, he said that Maher "was gonna f*ck up sooner or later".

Bill Maher offered an apology on his show Real Time Friday for using the N-word on air last week. Ben Sasse asked, "Would you like to come work in the field with us?" on the June 2 episode of Real Time.

In the past, Maher has argued that "nigger" (or "nigga") is no longer offensive, given the fact that the word has been reclaimed as a term of endearment by black people, especially in hip-hop music.

To his credit, Maher issued an apology for his racial slur gaffe. "I think we need to get to the root of the psyche".

"What they thought was, if even Bill Maher can at some level capitulate to a level of unconscious privilege, then the rest of us are in a serious spot", added Dyson. I just wanna know two questions. But first, there is someone who had a worse week than me: "Donald Trump". "I remember when Mitt Romney was running, he had a book, 'No Apologies.' Like Americans should never apologize". It doesn't matter that it wasn't said in malice, if it brought back pain to people and that's why I apologized freely and I reiterated tonight.

The NWA founding member reaffirmed earlier in the week that he'd be appearing on the show despite Maher's remarks, promising that he wouldn't back down. You got a great show. Now, I know you heard [it], it's in the lexicon and everybody's talkin', but that's our word now. Michael Eric Dyson will be out here shortly to take me to the woodshed.

Maher said that his use of the word "cost me a little bit of political capital". Meanwhile, the mid-episode guest was Ice Cube, who was ready to address his perspective on the controversy during the show's usual one-on-one discussion.

The rapper-actor used a chunk of his time as a guest on the HBO gabfest to both admonish and educate Maher about the host's recent N-word transgression.

That's when Bill explained his craft and what may have been behind him using the n-word. "You can use it as a weapon".

"Thank you for letting a sinner in your midst", Maher said.
