Behold, the Tesla Model Y (in near-total darkness)

Musk went as far as saying that launching the Model X with the number of configurations it had was a "big mistake", blaming it for the slow initial production rates of the SUV.

Musk has previously indicated that the Model Y will have a new electrical system throughout the vehicle, stating that 12V electronics would be removed in favor of next-generation electronics. According to a report by Teslarati, a Model 3 with autopilot feature, a glass roof, and a 75 kWh battery pack will cost around $50,000.

Musk also revealed a glimpse at Tesla's semi-truck, which is slated to be unveiled in September.

Musk expects demand for the Model Y to exceed that of Model 3. Above is our first look at its latest model - a smaller sibling to the Model X SUV, which will be dubbed the Model Y. The California-based electric auto manufacturer has divulged some details to accompany the cryptic picture, too.

Elon Musk has unveiled a teaser image for a new addition to his Tesla electric vehicle line-up. At a Tesla shareholder's meeting, company boss Elon Musk confirmed that the new compact crossover will be ready to hit the roads in 2019.

When the Model Y launches, not long after the arrival of the Model 3, Tesla will have a four-strong electric auto line-up which is being referred to by some as the "sexy" line-up since it comprises of the Model S, 3, X and Y.

"It would have just been better to design an SUV the way an SUV should be designed, otherwise you're just trying to shoehorn something in that doesn't make sense".

Tesla and Elon Musk has been in the news recently for all the right and wrong reasons.

Accordingly, Tesla is planning to make the Model Y on a different platform from the Model 3 and is giving "serious consideration" to adding at least one new plant by 2019 to make it happen - and possibly 10 or 20 worldwide in the longer run. "The line isn't getting shorter". "They just want to know how many can they buy, and how soon". In talking about the development of the previous models, he admitted that while he was excited about the Model Y, he was hoping to avoid missteps with this vehicle that he felt were made in the past.

"Any customer can have a vehicle painted any color that he wants so long as it is black", Henry Ford once said.
