Mallya drops in at Kohli event; Indian team avoids him

After watching India take on arch-rivals Pakistan at Edgbaston on Sunday, it has now been reported that liquor baron Vijay Mallya, who is wanted in India for defaulting on bank loans worth Rs 9,000 crore, was present at Virat Kohli's Charity Ball on Monday.

Well, Mallya recently tweeted that he will also attend India-Sri Lanka and South Africa later in the week.

Earlier, pictures shared widely on social media showed the owner of the now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines sitting in the stands during the India-Pakistan Champions Trophy match, wearing a white coat. "I intend to attend all games to cheer the India team".

Mallya is known to be a cricket lover but BCCI sources were quick to distance team and officials from his presence.

Mallya, whose now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines owes more than Rs. 9,000 crore, including interest to various banks, fled India on March 2 a year ago.

However, Indian cricketers maintained distance from Mallya in order to avoid any controversies. Interestingly, nobody knew who invited Mallya to the function.

Having a past relationship with Virat and other cricketers as the former owner of the Royal Challengers franchise in the IPL and his present state of grace (or lack of it) with the Indian government, this awkwardness was pure grandstanding. Mallya's presence is one of the reasons that team left early. The players were very uncomfortable. He was arrested by United Kingdom police to be extradited, only to be granted bail and released in a few hours.

Mallya was spotted arriving at the ball in a Rolls Royce, and sources close to the team indicated Virat Kohli and Co had no idea he had bought a table, or was among the invitees. "It was an unavoidable situation as one couldn't have possibly asked him to leave".
