Donald Trump will not block James Comey testimony

In firing Comey last month, Trump cited performance issues, while critics accused him of trying to close down the Russian Federation probe.

President Trump will not try to assert executive privilege over conversations with James Comey, a spokesperson said Monday, clearing the way for the ex-FBI director's testimony before Congress on Thursday. This comes in wake of much speculation that the U.S. president may in fact exercise his right to block it.

But asked directly whether Trump would invoke executive privilege to block Comey from speaking, she said: "The president will make that decision". Trump had reportedly repeatedly asked Comey about his loyalty, but the Federal Bureau of Investigation chief had refused to indicate any such thing.

Asked at a news conference if he pressured Comey to drop the Flynn probe, Trump had said, "No. No". NYT reports that Comey defied the order.

Most major U.S. television networks plan to carry the event live. Of course, Comey too is facing a situation in which he could be put under pressure as he did not do anything if he thought Trump's request was not right.

Comey is scheduled to speak publicly for the first time since he was sacked and since several news outlets reported that his memos showed that Trump sought to persuade him to drop his probe into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

Trump Won't Block James Comey's Testimony Before Congress

If Trump had asserted executive privilege over Comey, it would have likely created the perception that the administration was seeking to hide information about the FBI's Russian Federation investigation. Comey is scheduled to testify on Capitol Hill Thursday.

Mueller, respected for his independence and thoroughness, has so far been silent about taking over the investigations.

President Donald Trump speaks in the East Room at the White House in Washington, Monday, June 5, 2017.

Mueller has reportedly met with Comey to discuss the parameters of his testimony.

The online news outlet said the NSA report depicted a hacking operation tied closely to Moscow's GRU intelligence directorate that targeted private United States companies providing voter registration services and equipment to local governments around the country.
