Texas A&M Great Sharonda McDonald Returns to WCWS with Florida

Kelly Barnhill gave up just three hits to help Florida roll past Texas A&M 8-0 in five innings Thursday, the opening day of the Women's College World Series.

The Aggies will play in an elimination game at 11 a.m. Saturday against the loser of this afternoon's LSU/UCLA game. Saturday's game will be available on ESPN and on the LSU Sports Radio Network (107.3 FM in Baton Rouge and on LSUsports.net/live).

Nicole Pendley tacked on an RBI double for good measure, and that two-run cushion was all the Sooners needed.

Washington starter Taran Alvelo was almost flawless in the outing, tossing a complete-game two-hitter to help her team advance to the WCWS semifinals against Florida on Sunday at 12 p.m. ET.

Paige Parker (26-5) struck out four in five innings for her 16th straight postseason victory and Paige Lowary retired all six she faced for her 10th save, the NCAA high and a school season record. "We just came out on fire".

Aleshia Ocasio made perhaps the play of the game in the second inning when she ran into foul territory and caught a fly ball as she fell over a barrier.

Florida added a run in the sixth inning on a solo home run by Janell Wheaton off Allie Walljasper that made it 3-0. But no, I just think our kids have to make sure that they trust themselves in any situation, whether it be against a No. 1 team in the country or whether it be against a four-seed at regionals."On the tight strike zone".

LSU was also one of three teams that accomplished the feat on the road by taking down higher-seeded teams, while Oklahoma, which won two of the past four NCAA titles, joined the group with a two-game road sweep of Auburn.

As had been the case for most of the World Series, the Huskies' bats couldn't get going.

"My Dad (Chris) took me the last time A&M played here", Sartain said. "But I think it really shows just where we are with our sport".

"It feels like a dream ... it's so surreal that I can't get the smile off my face", sophomore outfielder Amanda Lorenz told floridagators.com after the team's first practice on Oklahoma City on Tuesday.

The Huskies took advantage of a two-out error in the seventh. Jenna Lilley was hit by a pitch to put two on with no outs.

The Sooners (59-9) will play top-seeded Florida tonight to start the best-of-three championship series.

Oregon's Megan Kleist (20-4) pitched a complete game in the loss.

Florida, which won the title in 2014-15, advanced to the winner's bracket final.

However, big games are usually old hat for UF under coach Tim Walton, who has guided the Gators to eight CWS appearances in 10 years.

The other bracket is Oregon, Washington, Baylor and Oklahoma.
