Graham Rahal wins 1st of 2 Detroit Grand Prix IndyCar races

It was the younger Rahal's first win in Detroit on the IndyCar circuit after having finished second and third in previous Detroit races.

"I never felt that confident in my career", Rahal said after his fifth career victory and fourth in two-plus years.

Castroneves had got the jump on Rahal through the first pit cycle, but as he was on a three-stop strategy, the advantage always lay with Rahal as he led 55 of a possible 70 laps. James Hinchcliffe gave Honda a podium sweep by placing third in the No. 5 Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports entry.

Americans Josef Newgarden and Alexander Rossi rounded out the top-five at fourth and fifth respectively. The Hondas of Indianapolis 500 victor Takuma Sato and Alexander Rossi will start in the second row, followed by the Hondas of James Hinchcliffe and Scott Dixon.

Scott Dixon finished a remarkable second in the opening race around the streets of Belle Isle on Saturday despite racing with a painful left ankle, which he has been struggling with throughout the week following his vicious crash during the Indianapolis 500.

For Dixon, he will now be resting the ankle and preparing himself for more of the same on Sunday for race two, although he hopes to improve the performance of his auto to be in with a better shot of victory.

Although Castroneves had his fastest lap deleted for failing to slow during the local yellow flag, the Brazilian's other lap time was still enough to secure him P2 on the grid alongside Rahal. The rescue crew got the vehicle righted so quickly he didn't lose a lap to the leaders. The pole is his first since 2009 and the team's first since 2007.

Qualifying for Race 2 at Belle Isle starts at 10:45 a.m. ET Sunday and streams live on

IndyCar will conclude its only doubleheader of races Sunday on Belle Isle.
