Cuba warns of human trafficking risk due to frosty U.S. ties

According to the report, the airline sector alone would lose about $2 billion in revenue over the next four years, were Trump to reverse Cuba policies.

A bipartisan group of US senators last week reintroduced legislation to repeal all restrictions on travel to Cuba, this time attracting far more co-sponsors.

The group believes that over the course of Trump's first term in office, cutting links with Cuba would cost $6.6 billion and threaten 12,295 American jobs, with the people most affected by additional travel and trade regulations on Cuba would be those in rural communities dependent on shipping, agriculture and manufacturing.

President Barack Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro initiated the process in 2014, overturning decades of diplomatic hostility, economic and business restrictions, and constraints on travel between the two countries that had its roots in the Cold War. "He would see that the current policy has given the Cuban people real hope for a better future, a future that is naturally linked to the United States and the American people".

The states that would be hit hardest by a Cuba roll back are those with deep water ports and those close to Cuba, including Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi. These include a number of airlines and cruise lines providing travel to and from the island, telecommunications companies establishing voice traffic and data pacts, and Google, which could expand internet access within the country.

"A lot of the bureaucracy has been resisting a complete rollback of Obama's policy", said Christopher Sabatini, a Latin America specialist and executive director of Global Americans, a research organisation. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Sen.

According to anonymous sources within Trump's administration to the New York Times, a decision on reversing these policies have not yet been set due to internal disagreements on how much one of President Obama's most significant foreign policy should be eliminated.

After parliamentarians had approved the Conceptualization of the Cuban Economic and Social Model of Socialist Development, and the updating of the Guidelines of the Policies of the Party and the Revolution for the period 2016-2021, Raúl said that such documents also constitute sustenance of the role played by the Party as the leading force of society and the State.

"In the past two years since President Obama announced his policy of opening up to Cuba, we've seen economic exchanges, investments and jobs growth in the USA and in Cuba's private sector", said Christopher Sabatini, a Latin America specialist and executive director of Global Americans.
