Strong, swift UN reaction to Trump on climate

The Washington Post, and many other outlets, have already reported that Trump is leaning toward exiting the deal, while cautioning that he could still change his mind.

Trump on Wednesday declared that abandoning the Paris climate agreement would be a victory for the American economy. The former reality TV star with a flair for drama later promoted his Rose Garden announcement in a tweet.

But despite several leaks and indications that Trump will withdraw, per his campaign promise to do so, it's possible that he could stay in.

That promise helped rally supporters sharing his scepticism of global efforts to police U.S. carbon emissions.

The document was sealed in 2015 to replace the Kyoto Protocol on greenhouse gas emissions.

Under Obama, Washington had pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 26-28 percent below 2005 levels by 2025.

What is not yet clear is whether Trump plans to initiate a formal withdrawal from the Paris accord, which under the terms of the agreement could take three years, or exit the underlying United Nations climate change treaty on which the accord was based.

President Donald Trump may abandon US pledges to reduce carbon emissions that contribute to global warming, but that step seems unlikely to stall the push to adopt cleaner forms of energy.

"As some of the largest companies based or operating in the United States, we strongly urge you to keep the United States in the Paris Agreement on climate change", said the ad, which directly addresses the president.

At the recent G7 meeting, other world leaders are understood to have urged Trump to stay inside the agreement, though the U.S. did not commit to the deal as other leaders did. Withdrawing would leave the United States aligned only with Russian Federation among the world's industrialized economies in rejecting action to combat climate change. "Climate change presents both business risks and business opportunities". Electric auto giant Elon Musk and Exxon also pressed the president to stay with the 2015 pact.

Hundreds of high-profile businesses have spoken out in favour of the deal, including Apple, Google and Walmart. Even fossil fuel companies such as Exxon Mobil, BP and Shell say the United States should abide by the deal.

While not mentioning the name, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying tells reporters climate change is a "global challenge" that no country can ignore.

China's Premier Li Keqiang said fighting climate change is a "global consensus" and "international responsibility".

"It is downright un-American for a President to abdicate United States leadership to the great challenges facing our planet", Markey said in a statement.

That option would be much quicker, taking only a year, but would be a more drastic move from the Trump administration.

That fight has played out within the Trump administration.

President Donald Trump signs an executive order on US energy policy and climate regulations, on March 28 at the Environmental Protecton Agency in Washington, D.C. Looking on and smiling are EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt, at left wearing blue tie, and coal industry workers.

"There's a huge market that somebody's going to own and we're giving it up", Clinton said. Senior adviser Jared Kushner generally thinks the deal is bad but still would like to see if emissions targets can be changed. And the final decision may not be entirely clear-cut: Aides were still deliberating on "caveats in the language", one official said.

Speaking from Brussels, European officials said the effort to advance a low-carbon economy had considerable economic support.

"A key risk to fulfilling this objective is remaining in the Paris Agreement", it reads.

"Once China's development reaches a certain level, it has to move to a sustainable model, that means we have to push green development", he said.
